I couldn’t stop thinking about her. No matter how hard I tried, she was woven into every thought. She was even starting to make her way into my drawings. I desperately wanted to message her all night. To see her playful responses. But I had to get some sleep. I had to focus on my classes and on the competition. I couldn’t be distracted anymore by Olivia Banks.

Who was I kidding, anyway? Even if I did develop feelings for Olivia, it would never work. She would never feel the same toward me. I was poor, without connections, and I’d never fit in with her circle of friends. Though, the longer I thought about it, the more alone she seemed these days. I wondered how she spent her spare time and if she was still seeing any of her old friends. Then again, I knew most of them had gone off to different universities. I doubted there would be much time for them to reconnect.

I went to my first few classes, grateful to have something to focus on other than Olivia. But my body thrummed with the prospect of seeing her later. Underneath the studious expression and focused mind, my body was still alive with the hope of getting closer to her. I knew I had to reel it in. To keep it in check. The last thing I needed to do was to make a move and get shot down.

Was she even a lesbian? I felt certain that she was. I’d suspected it for years, but it was more apparent now. The way her eyes met mine during the few occasions we’d been pleasant to one another made me certain. But admitting that would be admitting she was attracted to me, and no matter how she looked at me, I couldn’t believe for a second that she’d be interested in me of all people.

I just wasn’t her type.

I thought back to high school, trying to remember what Olivia’s type was. But I couldn’t remember ever seeing her with a boy. Not seriously. It gave me a flutter of hope, but I tried to squash it as soon as it arrived. You’re being ridiculous, I thought. Focus on school. Before you lose everything.

I finished my classes and made my way to the studio. I willed myself to turn to stone around Olivia. I didn’t want to give anything away. I didn’t want to make a fool of myself. But when I walked in, that all changed. My resolve crumbled.

Chopin was playing on a pair of her good speakers and she was standing, leaning back against her table as if she was waiting for me to arrive. Her hair was draped around her shoulders and she wore a deep purple dress that hugged every tempting curve of her body as the hem fell over a pair of black knee-high boots. She looked stunning. My breath hitched at the sight of her. It was going to be a long hour.

She smiled wide when she saw me and held out her hands.
